Jing-mei’s mother is one of the main characters and the antagonist in the short story “Two Kinds“ by Amy Tan. Her real name is not mentionend in the story, the reader only knows her as the mother of Jing-mei.

After losing her family, she married again and became pregnant with her daughter Jing-mei. With her second husband and her daughter Jing-mei, she lives in the “Sacramento“ Street in Chinatown, a city in Carlifornia (ll.46-47)

The short story does not give any information about the appearance of Jing-mei’s mother, but the reader gets to know that Jing-mei’s mother beliefs in the American Dream. She´s conviced of it that in America anyone can become something and that you can become succesful no matter which kind of background you have (ll.1-6). That´s why she wants her daughter to become a child prodigy (l.4). She´s very determined and thinks that Jing-mei can become famous even though she does not have any special abilities in something.
