Hallo,
if heißt falls/wenn und drückt eine Bedingung aus (kausal)
We will have a barbecue if the weather is fine at the weekend.
when heißt wenn/sobald und bezieht sich auf die Zeit (temporär)
Dad will buy charcoal for the barbecue when he comes home on Friday evening.
When I come home tonight, I'm going to watch TV.
when = wenn (zeitlich)

when and if
A person who says when (referring to the future) is sure that something will happen. A person who says if is unsure whether it will happen or not.
Compare:
I’ll see you at Christmas when we’re all at Sally’s place. (We are certain to be at Sally’s place.)
I’ll see you in August if I come to New York. (Perhaps I’ll come to New York, perhaps not.)
To talk about repeated, predictable situations and events (in the sense of ‚whenever‘), both when and if can be used with little difference of meaning.
When/If you heat ice it turns to water.
When/If I’m in Liverpool I usually stay with my sister.

Falls vs wenn
Das ist ganz einfach:
- if: wenn du "falls" sagen kannst
- when: wenn du vor das "when" ein "jedes Mal" einsetzen kannst
When I see you, I'm happy. (jedes Mal)
If I saw you, I'd be happy. (falls)

If und when heißen übersetzt beide „wenn”. Wenn du nicht sicher bist, ob etwas Erwartetes eintritt, benutztdu if im Sinne von falls. Es liegt dann eine Bedingung vor. Das Wort when benutzt du im Sinne von sobald.
