Read independently?

The book is called god of death and rest from a book series with three books.

It's a little embarrassing but I just bought the second part of the series. Now my question is would be a problem if I read this book a first?

It's almost always better to start a series with the first volume. The only exception to this rule that I know of is Liaden by Sharon Lee and Steve Miller - because that's a universe, not a series, and you have several books to start with. So I would recommend waiting to read volume two until you have volume one in hand and can then read them in the right order. Because it's usually more fun to read volume two if you know what happened in volume one. And it's easier to follow the plot if you know why a person acts the way (s)he does or why an event happened the way it did.
