Edinburgh is the capital of Scotland and the second largest city in Scotland after Glaskow. Edinburgh is named after Edwin a king of ancient Northumbria. Edinburg has half a million inhabitants and has been the seat of the Scottish Parliament since 1999. Edinburgh is located in the Scottish lowlands on the Firth of Forth. This is a part of the North Sea that extends into the mainland. There are two bridges over the Firth of Forth, one for trains and one for cars. The first bridge was built from eighteen hundred and seventy-one to eighteen hundred and seventy-eight. The bridge collapsed on the twenty-seventh of December eighteen hundred and seventy-nine. Seventy-five people died. The new railroad bridge was built from eighteen hundred and eighty three to eighteen hundred and eighty seven. The name of the red bridge is Firth of Forth Railway. The highway bridge is called Forth Road Bridge and was built from nineteen hundred and fifty-eight to nineteen hundred and sixty-four.
Edinburgh is one of the most visited cities in Scotland. The most famous sights are Edinburgh Castle and St. Giles Cathedral.
Edinburgh Castle was home to kings and queens for many centuries. Queen Margaret died here. The chaptel built in her honour by her son King David the first. Edinburg castle is the oldest bulding in Edinburg. The castle was built on an extinct volcano in the twelfth century. One million people visit the castle every year.
The St. Giles Cathedral also called High Kirk of Edinburgh was built in the year eleven hundred and twenty. After a fire in the year thirteen hundred and eighty-five, the cathedral rebuilt. The tower was completed only fourteen hundred and ninety-five. The cathedral is still open today and church services are held.
In Edinburgh a cafe has also become a pilgrimage site for Harry Potter fans. In the Elephant House the writer J.K Rowling wrote the Harry Potter volumes one and two and the famous James Bond actor Sean Connery was born in Edinburgh.
