Eine EINDEUTIG, einzig richtige Interpretation gibt es nicht. Vielleicht so:

Kay seems to play "hard to get", behaves arrogantly, but it seems that secretely she likes Bob ( > tears, stumbled) although she says the opposite.

"He had some poetry to write" may mean that she no longer thinks that Bob is stupid, but also indirectly that she still feels better educated than her friend.

The fire from the refineries may stand symbolically for her secret feelings of love for Bob - but Bob leaves her, and the fire (her secret love) is "washed away" by her tears.
