Früher wurde Milch in Flaschen geliefert und vor die Tür gestellt.
In dem Lied geht es darum, dass die Nachbarin, in die der Sänger verliebt ist, ausgezogen ist und wie schlimm er das findet. "No milk today" ist die Nachricht, die sie an die Tür heftet, weil sie logischerweise keine Milch mehr geliefert bekommen will. Vor der Tür steht die letzte leere Flasche Milch, die sie bekommen hat und zurück gibt.

Die leere Milchflasche, die man damals in England vor die Tür stellte, wenn der Milchmann kam, ist der Aufhänger, das Symbol für die Trauer, (indem er sie eben nicht vor die Tür stellt?) .
