The cartoon was drawn by Patrick Chappate. It was published on Tuesday, October, 30th, 2018 In the New York Times and was created in response to US- president Donald Trumps immigration policy, specifically his plan of building a wall between Mexico and the US in order to keep undocumented immigrants out of the country.
The cartoon is made up of an axis reflection, which represents Donald Trump on the left side with his typical look a Swede in combination with a red tie and his uniquely styled blond hair. He is sitting on a chair which is standing ahead of a big American flag. Trump is doing an OK gesture with an convinced facial expression. Towards him is the German chancellor Angela Merkel, also sitting on a chair with a German flag behind of her. Merkel can be identified by her haircut, her facial features and the clothing style. The expression of the German chancellor is annoyed. There is a speech bubble above Trumps head which says “You guys in Berlin had a terrific wall”. Also the background is colourless and unobtrusive while both figures and the flags are colourized. In the cartoon, Donald Trump is praising the Berlin Wall, even though by society at large it is generally seen as a symbol of oppression. Merkel clearly has the same adverse opinion what is noticeable on the criticising and bugged countenance of her. Because of the German flag it seems very obviously, that Merkel is representing the German nation, which has seen the Berlin Wall as negative. Trump is saying his favourite word “terrific”, which is typical for the US president. That is symbolic for the usual egoistic manner everybody is expecting from him. Clearly, the cartoonist is trying to imply, that the Berlin Wall and the wall that Trump wants to build on the US-Mexican border are similar. This is recognisable because of the depiction and the pictorial division. Both countries are shown in a similar way, because of the axis reflection in the cartoon. The two flags are positioned the same way and are both representing their countries, just as Donald Trump and Angela Merkel. Although the comparison is hampered a little by the fact, that the Berlin Wall was built to keep citizens in East Berlin from leaving the GDR, unlike the wall that Trump wants to build which is supposed to keep foreigners from entering the US. Noticeable is also, that the background is unobtrusive and colourless in contrast to the politicians and both flags. That shows, how important this political theme is.
