Public holiday of Constitution Day - Dia de la Constitucion always on 6th December. Many big shops in Barcelona like Corte Ingles department stores and Barcelona shopping malls are open today for Christmas shopping. This day commorates the new Constitution of Spain from 1978, when Spain became a democracy. Check the links below to find the official website, where you can download a copy of the Spanish constitution in several languages. Constitution day is generally not celebrated much in Barcelona except for some political events. It is mostly used to enjoy a long weekend and early Christmas holiday because the 8th of December is another public holiday in Spain called La Immaculada - the Day of the Immaculate Conception. It is common in Spain is to take the day off that comes in between a public holiday (dia festivo) and the weekend if the public/bank holiday is on a Tuesday or Thursday. In Spain this is called "to make a bridge" or "hacer puente" in Spanish. In Barcelona this means is a big exodus from the city on big puente weekends, so book in advance, if you want to leave town and be prepared for long traffic delays leaving and returning to Barcelona. Catalonia is an autonomous province of Spain, so there are also several autonomous regional holidays just for Barcelona or Catalonia.
