With his sentence Carls Sandburg compares the life with an onion. He says they are similar because both of them have different layers which you have to peel off one by one and sometimes you cry by opening a layer. He means that the life are like the layers of an onion because you do not know what comes next and if the next part/layer of your life will be good or bad.
The novel “Holes” is a good example to explain this sentence. For everyone who is in Camp Green Lake this is a bewildering layer because they did not know this layer before and coeval a layer which make them cry.
The best examples for this comparison are the main characters Stanley and Hector because both of them had different layers in their life. Some of them were positive and some were negative. Stanley’s first layer which is mention in the novel is the time before he went to the camp. The second and bewildering layer is the camp. There were no signs before that this would happen in Stanley´s life. This is a proof that nobody knows which layers/parts come next in his life. His third layer is the time after the camp which is also surprising because actually he should stay there.
In Hectors life you can find different layers too. The first one is before he went to the camp. The second one is while the time in the camp and the third and most surprising one is after the camp. Hector had only layers past which “made him cry” and finally his life turns to the good.
I think the comparison of Carl Sandburg is absolutely correct because there are different and especially unexpected layers in my life too. I am sure that everyone has different layers in his life because in every life are modifications and that´s what the layers are. I think the word “bewildering!” makes Carl Sandburg´s sentence to a very good comparison because it is important that nobody can say how many layers he is going to have and how they will look.
In my opinion Carl Sandburg´s comparison is very special but it is very applicable too. This will be clear for everybody who compares the sentence with the book “Holes” and after that with his own life.
