Wir wissen nicht genau, woher Douglas Adams diese Information hatte, als er "Per Anhalter durch die Galaxis" schrieb, aber sie ist bedauerlich und völlig falsch. Faultiere sind tatsächlich sehr vorsichtig, wenn sie sich in den Bäumen bewegen. Bevor sie sich bewegen, müssen sie sicher sein, dass der Ast, an dem sie sich festhalten, stark genug ist, um ihr Gewicht zu tragen. Außerdem ist ihr Griff unglaublich stark (stärker als der eines Menschen), und so würden sie es wahrscheinlich merken, wenn sie sich an ihrem eigenen Arm festhalten! Faultiere haben vielleicht keine großen Gehirne, aber so langsam sind sie auch nicht!

We don’t know exactly where Douglas Adams got this information from when writing “The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy” but it is unfortunate and completely wrong. Sloths are actually very careful when they move about in the trees. Before they move, they need to be sure that the branch they are holding onto is strong enough to carry their weight. Also, their grip is incredibly strong (stronger than any human), and so they would probably notice if they grabbed onto their own arm! Sloths may not have big brains, but they are certainly not that slow-witted!
